It's May, already! Our readers have made leaps & bounds of progress this year. How can we maintain this progress throughout the summer? Here's our successful, last minute solution.
We encouraged parents to Buy One, Give One (book) in conjunction with the Scholastic Book Fair at our building, After bringing new books into their homes, we asked parents to weed out their gently loved books and donate them to less fortunate children in our building.
"Oh, I've always wanted this one!" "We get to KEEP these?"
Research states that one common factor in preventing summer reading loss is students owning books.
The response was overwhelming! Boxes and more boxes were filled with books. Our readers were elated to stuff their bags (left over from the Book Fair) full of books to keep as their "forever friends." We asked our students to leave their bags in the classroom until we had a chance to add a letter to parents. Numerous times students would say, "When can we take our NEW books home?" An easy fix for a monumental problem - summer reading slide! (see downloads for parent letters)
Thank you, whimsy clips for brightening our letters to parents!
