Marie Clay recommends three ways of remembering: 1) seeing the letter 2) talking about letter features 3) using movement. Based on this research, we developed an ABC book for small group instruction for early writers. Pairing finger tracing with verbal prompts provides memory hooks for letter identification and fluent, correct formation. Over learning and consistency prevents reversals which can be problematic and difficult to correct. Writers take on this learning to scaffold themselves while writing independently.
