Mid Year Testing We are tweaking our teaching methods after mid year testing. We analyzed running records and looked for processing patterns in our students' reading. After "drilling down", we discovered that sight words were not read with speeded recognition or were often self corrected. Yes, our students ARE reading daily at school and at home. Next, we pondered ways to increase sight word proficiency for our LLI group. Fast-Paced to Build Automaticity Our plan was to continue to teach LLI lessons with fidelity but provide just a few minutes of extra support. We decided to carve out just a few minutes one day each week for short concentrated sight word practice. Researchers say It often takes 15-30 exposures of a word to be able to recall the word. REALLY, that many exposures? Sight word practice was accomplished quickly and easily during small group instruction. Earning shamrock coins (purchased at Hobby Lobby) has been motivating while building confidence. Our readers look forward to this weekly activity. Here's How it Works: Four readers work together. Readers #1 and #2 race to read the word appearing on the screen. Reader#3 presses the arrow key to advance the power point to the next word. Reader #4 slides the coin to the first reader, correctly reading the word. If both readers pronounce the word at the same time, neither reader receives a coin. The teacher supervises as "referee." We used one word list for each setting, changing roles one time. Procedures can be adapted for the number of students in your group. Hoping this helps our readers recognize the words in text more automatically.
