"Struggling readers especially need huge amounts of high success reading." from the book What Really Matters for Struggling Readers by Richard Allington.
Last year, our readers showed growth in accuracy, reading levels, & comprehension however their rate of reading plateaued. Our quest for a solution led us to Richard Allington's a recommendation - to encourage our readers to read huge amounts of easy reading text. Parents jumped on board to support our efforts. Students chose from a plethora of books to read at home day after day for several months. We did not realize the impact until we gathered data from end of the year testing. As we tracked our students, we discovered that most of our readers did not suffer from summer learning loss as in previous years. Note: It was important for us to understand that successful reading means missing no more than one or two words within a 100 word passage.
